Mortgage Crisis Critical Congressional Actions

Some of the links are valid, some get you a 404 or "unauthorized". If you can't find what you want, do this:
Go to the Library of Congress
Click on "search multiple, previous congresses"
In the search box, type S. 900
That should bring up the bill. It's a little confusing at first, but stick with it. Once you get used to the process of looking over actual bills, you have a direct line to the truth about who in Congress is good for us and who is not.
This was the bill that did the deregulating for us. There were many different versions, but this is the one that passed.
The vote is at the bottom of this column if you want to see how your reps voted-if they're still around of course. This was 1999-2000.
Later, I'll post the votes on bills written to try and protect Americans from this. There have been regular attempts ever since it went into effect.
This list of actions is posted because we keep hearing that Senator Gramm "slipped it in right before Christmas". As you can see, that's nonsense. There was a lot of discussion about this and others like it.
We also hear that it was done so that the less affluent could afford homes. Do you think that allowing the lenders to lower their standards was the best way to go about this?
If they didn't want to cap profit margins in real estate and construction, they might have at least made them price and procedure transparent so we could shop around. How can a free market work when consumers are shopping blindly?
What are we missing here? How does the legalization of ripping people off help this country?
For the profit mongers, how much is enough?
Final ignorant questions:
Where is all of this foreclosed on property ending up?
Where does/did all of the money made at the expense of these people go? Switzerland?
